Power Up with Proteins

April 7, 2020 10:00 am

Amid the COVID-19 Pandemic, we build up our defenses in fighting viruses and diseases by being vigilant about what we eat and what we feed our family. Here is another helpful food tip to ensure that you are consuming and/or serving the proper food in proper amounts.

Proteins or your “grow” foods are vital components of your regular meals. These are chicken, pork, beef, fish, seafood, eggs, cheese, etc. Do you know that mungbeans or “monggo” and tofu are also protein food? And do you know what can proteins contribute to defend us in this time of health crisis?

Protein is known to help in the repair and build-up of muscle and tissues. But aside from its regular functions, it also helps maintain your immune system cells and antibodies since it strengthen the structure of these cells and a type of protein acts as a signal  to the immune system to attack “damaged cells” that may cause infection. As you know, the immune system needs to be strengthened to fight infection from the virus and other diseases.

However, eating protein food with rice or other forms of Carbohydrates is not enough. For a healthy adult, protein and carbs should only fill half of your plate, the other half should contain your fruits and vegetables from various gulay recipes .

This will not only make your meals satisfying, it also adds a delicious variety that you and your family will enjoy. Partnering protein with vegetables and fruits can give a refreshing touch to your meals and may improve its quality, aesthetics and nutrient composition.

One example is pairing proteins with citrus fruits. In western culture, apples are caramelized to be partnered with veal, lamb, or beef. Avocados are sliced or mashed partnered with chicken or egg on a toast.

Mangoes, though often linked to desserts, shakes, or even a snack, can also be made in to a salsa perfectly paired with fried or grilled proteins. Try this Shrimp in Mango Salsa recipe made more special with AJI-SHIO® Pepper Seasoning Mix . Using AJI-SHIO® Pepper will not only cut down the cost of other ingredients, but it gives you the right flavour of salt, umami seasoning, and pepper to make your dish more appetizing.

Try experimenting on other vegetables and fruits partnered with protein. Watch out for more food, nutrition, and health tips.
